M*A*S*H es un clásico, una serie de referencia de Twentieth Century Fox Televisión, adaptada a formato televisivo a partir un gran éxito de la pantalla grande, el filme dirigido por Robert Altman en 1970.Tal y como sucedía en la película, la serie narra el día a día de este hospital (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, cuyas siglas le dan título), desde el punto de vista de un grupo de médicos, enfermeras y personal técnico, obligados a convivir en situación de riesgo, a miles de kilómetros de su casa. Una situación dramática que queda fuera de contexto, transformada en escenas hilarantes.La ironía de los guiones de la serie guarda muchas similitudes con el original de Altman. Como en la película, la acción se centra especialmente en los cirujanos Pierce y McIntyre, interpretados en el cine por Donald Sutherland y Elliot Gould, y en la televisión por un brillante Alan Alda y Wayne Rogers.La serie introduce una galería de personajes como la célebre y provocativa enfermera apodada "morritos calientes", encarnada en la televisión por Loretta Switt, y el joven "Radar", responsable de las comunicaciones del destacamento, encarnado por Gary Burghoff, el único actor de la película que repitió su papel en la serie.McLean Stevenson y Larry Linville completan el reparto como el Teniente Coronel Henry Blake y el Mayor Frank Burns, papel interpretado en la película por Robert Duvall.M*A*S*H se estrenó en la televisión norteamericana en 1972 y permaneció en antena durante más de diez años, hasta su fin definitivo en 1983. Durante todo este tiempo logró el respaldo del público y de la profesión, que convirtió la serie en una de las más premiadas de la historia con 13 Emmys y ocho Globos de Oro.
